Innovate

Automotive Lightweighting Driving Demand for Self Pierce Riveting and Aluminum Stud Welding

As a global leader in innovative fastening solutions, STANLEY Engineered Fastening is positioned to capitalize on the automotive industry’s continuing migration to lightweight materials. Under pressure to dramatically reduce CO2 emissions, automotive manufacturers continue to pursue alternatives to the traditional steel body and frame of vehicles, including aluminum, magnesium and composites—creating growing demand for new joining technology as an alternative to the traditional spot welding of steel.

For most lightweight material car bodies, Self Pierce Riveting and Aluminum Stud Welding are the preferred methods for joining and affixing components. In addition, STANLEY Engineered Fastening has developed highly engineered fastening solutions using POP® Avdel® blind rivets and self piercing rivets for carbon fiber material joints in composite and hybrid material structures.

IN 2013, STANLEY Engineered Fastening acquired Infastech in a strategic move to strengthen and broaden our engineered fastening offerings. The integration is progressing both rapidly and seamlessly, and is exceeding expectations. Our highly complementary product portfolio creates a powerful platform that is providing leading customers in a variety of global industries with fastening and assembly solutions wherever they choose to operate.

Two brands that wrote the book on blind fastening, POP® and Avdel,® have joined together to form a single, powerful entity with the largest and most extensive product portfolio of engineered structural and non-structural blind fastening systems in the world.

In 2014, building on Infastech’s legacy strength in the smartphone sector, we secured our first entry into the China smartphone market. And to facilitate further growth in the automotive sector, we have partnered with a manufacturing site in Korea to provide engineered fasteners and systems to major automotive companies such as Hyundai, Kia and General Motors.
